Is it true that papaya is effective as contraceptive and to induce abortion?

I read on wikipedia this:

"Women in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other parts of the world have long used green papaya as a folk remedy for contraception and abortion.[citation needed] Medical research in animals has confirmed the contraceptive and abortifacient capability of papaya, and also found that papaya seeds have contraceptive effects in adult male langur monkeys, possibly in adult male humans as well.[4] Unripe papaya is especially effective in large amounts or high doses. Papaya is not teratogenic and will not cause miscarriage in small, ripe amounts. Phytochemicals in papaya may suppress the effects of progesterone."

and

"It is also commonly believed to induce abortions and is best avoided by pregnant women."

Is this true?

and if so,

would this effects come to be by just EATING the fruit or is there some technique that is being omitted in this information?

Yes, it's true.

"Women in Sri Lanka use papaya fruit as contraceptives because they are cheap and natural," says Tharmalingam Senthilomohan. "If they want to become pregnant, they simply avoid eating them." His findings: abortion can be induced by eating unripe papaya for three consecutive days. And daily consumption of ripe fruit can be an effective contraceptive."

I would NOT, under any circumstance, rely on this as a means of contraceptive...maybe just as a back-up to whatever you normally use. otherwise, you'll end up with a bun in the oven. "Folk Remedies" are not what you would call reliable.
