Cut two rectangles the size of the desired mat plus half an inch (1.25 cm) in all directions (to allow for seams).
Sew around the perimeter.Sew the two rectangles together with printed or "right" sides facing together, leaving a 3-4 inch gap for turning.
Clip the corners.Miter the corners.
Turn it so that seam allowances are hidden inside.Turn it "right" side out.
Slip stitch the opening closed.
Top stitch the edges.Top stitch around the perimeter.
A design on each side.Congratulate yourself, as you have just sewn a placemat!
